Uzbek International Textile Fair was held in Tashkent

A two-day Uzbek International Textile Fair opened on 5 December in Tashkent. A press conference was conducted prior to the opening of the event.

The Minister of Foreign Economic Affairs, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Elyor Ganiev, the member of the Board of Directors of the International Textile Manufacturers Federation Herwig Strolz, and the Chairman of the UzbekYengilSanoat (Uzbek Light Industry) State Company Rahmatilla Ruzikulov participated in the briefing.

Over 200 representatives of the textile industry, companies and firms from 33 countries of the world were participating in the fair.

The aim of this large-scale forum is diversification of the national textile production, expansion of the geographical coverage of Uzbek textile exports, development of long-term partnership relations with the world\'s leading producers and trade companies, and introduction of the latest achievements of the textile industry of Uzbekistan to the participants of the fair.

Uzbekistan, as one of the major participants of the world cotton market – second in the world in terms of export and sixth in terms of product, attributes priority importance to the intensified modernization of the existing and creation of new, modern, high-tech productions in the textile sector. Over the years of independence, large-scale measures were implemented to gradually increase the scale of intensive processing of cotton fibre through the establishment of joint venture sand complexes specialized in the production of cotton fabrics, and ready-made garments that would correspond to the highest international standards.

With a stable, solid resource base, law energy costs, and highly qualified labour resources in hands, with the assistance of foreign partners Uzbekistan is launching new modern textile production enterprises. Today, the textile producers have the capacity for the processing of some 320,000 tonnes of cotton fibre, and production of 300,000 tonnes of cotton yarn, 195 million running meters of cotton fabric, 160 million ready-made garments and 11 million pairs of hosiery.

There has been a substantial increase in the export of products by the enterprises of the textile sector. To compare, in 1995, Uzbekistan exported goods for some USD 31.9 million, whereas in 2007 the indicator is forecasted to reach USD 441 million.

Within the frame of the Uzbek International Textile Fair, the current condition and development prospects of the world textile market, as well as the issues concerning the access and expansion of the supplies of Uzbek textile to the potential consumer markets were discussed. Participants familiarized with the investment policy of Uzbekistan and the experience of foreign investors in the textile industry of the country. They also visited a number of textile enterprises.
